Work/Life Balance
An important part of life is to remember to keep a proper work/life balance. Whether you are starting/running your own business or even if you don’t work for yourself, making time for a personal life is a major part of living a happy, fulfilling life.
It is very easy to get caught up with work, after all if we don’t work we can’t very well have much of a personal life, can we? But, overworking ourselves can lead to health and relationship/family problems.
Office Hours
Although working from home can at first seem like a dream come true…very quickly you may realize that you don’t get as much accomplished as you thought you would, because it is very easy to get sidetracked by household tasks or other distractions. Setting ground rules for yourself regarding the amount of time, or time frame, spent each day on work is a good way to start.
Just because you don’t drive to work doesn’t mean you shouldn’t have set “office hours”. If you work with clients you certainly don’t want them calling you at 7am or 10pm if that’s time you normally spend with your family. Not only does that give the client a sense that they are dealing with an actual business professional, but it allows you to dedicate more time to your family. A win-win situation!
Home Office
In addition to office hours, you should have space dedicated to your “office”. A computer set up in the family room may not be the best choice, since it lends itself to allowing many distractions and doesn’t give you the opportunity to be “at work” when you might need to be. If you’re in your office, it’s easier for everyone in the household to understand that you are working, minimizing distractions…and again allowing you to dedicate time for your family.
Working and making money is necessary in life, but don’t forget to take the time to enjoy your life along the way.
